The Republic of Cyprus in the European Union (EU) not to be confused with the unrecognised Northern Cyprus is one of the most developed, safest and progressive countries in Europe. Additionally, the Cypriot Governments response to the international Covid Pandemic has been one of the most successful in the world with an extremely low number of cases.
The Cypriot League is now considered to be one of the best leagues outside of UEFA’s ‘Top 5 Leagues (England, Germany, Spain, Italy, France). The league has been a launchpad to many players careers as Cypriot teams such as APOEL, APPOLLON, AEK and OMONIA have competed in the UEFA Champions League and Europa League over the last 15 years. APOEL famously reached the quarter finals in the 2011/12 season where they were eliminated by Real Madrid.
Just some players that currently play or have played in the Cyprus League are: Abdullahi Shehu, Francis Uzoho, Jason Puncheon, Adam Lang, Fernando Cavenaghi, Nuno Morais, John Arne Riise, Ernest Asante, Grigoris Kastanos, Emilio Nsue.
Work permit regulations mean that going directly to the Top 5 leagues is quite impossible for non-European players. Only national team players and those that are purchased for large transfer fees can qualify usually.
"This is a sensible pathway for professional football development with the safety net of a top-class education"
